Dyes Stain Water Based

Do yo know that transparent system have a colorant too? Or you just know that colored paint only in solid color? In transparent(lacquer) system have a colorant too. It called dyes stain. This colorant mostly used to coloring wood fibers in antique finishing. If the color doesn't match yet, some time stain can be added at sanding sealer or top coat.

In water based system have a dyes stain too. It can be diluted with water. Sometimes to accelerate evaporation, some paint manufactures add solvent to water based stain. Of course the solvent compatible with water. such as alcohol types, methanol(methyl alcohol). This solvent can very quick evaporate and compatible with water.

The disadvantage of water based stain is still many of it can produce bright colors if compare with solvent based stain. Some times it can be from the next coating(ex. sanding sealer) or the binder used in water based stain. Why water based stain used binder? Some paint manufacture produce water based stain at solution. The real stain could be from pigments. This pigments diluted with water and add some binder. Adding some binder, of course for make water based stain have good adhesion. So water based stain in store is a solution with many color.

Using Water based stain and coated again with water based system which using PUD(Poly Urethane Dispersion) binder could make good clarity and bright color. Paint manufactures produce it to compare with solvent based paint in antique effect. Because using PUD binder water based paint become high price but it more friendly environmental and have good chemical resistant. This paint types(for antique furniture finishing) mostly produce in one system from stain, glaze until top coat.

If you usually using solvent based stain and switch to water based stain in antique furniture finishing, it would make you little confused. But why? It's because the color effect from water based stain. Although you have water based stain and solvent based stain with same color, but if you coating again it would show a little different. This different makes antique furniture manufactures more be careful if they change the system application from full solvent based switch to full water based.
