Do you have an old furniture? And you want to repair it? Do you confused what kind paints used? Knowing what paint you want to used is a better way if you want to painted your furniture. If you want to repair it, you must clean it from older paint. Because old paint can make bad adhesion. Your paint will be crack because it's not compatible with the newest paint coatings.
Some furniture have some effect like antique effect. It's like an old furniture and it has own sense. Antique effect mostly used solvent based paint. How about water based paint? Water based have disadvantage. It would affect the clarity. But some paint manufacture already create water based which using PUD(poly urethane) binder. This binder have good clarity and good scratch if compare with old binder(emulsion types). Of course it would be impact on price.
This antique effect must be used glaze to make dirty furniture so looks like an old furniture. If solvent based have glaze solvent based(ex. NC), water based has it too. Glaze water based is a glaze which based on water. So it can be diluted with water. Although glaze not only make dirty furniture but it must have good adhesion. Glaze water based using pigments too. It use too filling pores. Better say if it use to coloring the wood pores.

The paint components used, using water based paint component too. For paint manufacture, creating glaze is a challenge. Glaze water based must be have good adhesion and good to be wipe too. Why it must have good wiping? Application glaze water based in antique furniture mostly by spray and then wiping. If glaze water based not good enough to be wipe, its can't be used anymore. To create glaze water based to be good wiping it will used slow dry solvent or a specific binder. Using to much slow dry solvent it can cause bad adhesion.

So customer know what all paint needed to create an antique effect. These all paint meaning from sanding sealer until top coat. So paint manufacture can control the adhesion of paint coating.
