Water Based Paint

Do you know what is the meaning of paint? We think you already know it. And you already know that paint is made from chemical mixtures. And the other side you need your furniture, kitchen sets, child furniture, toys, and baby crib look more beautiful, right? For some people are still afraid to painting their furniture(especially furniture which contact with the children) by them self because feared of poison which contain in the paint. At this time already developed rules to restrict on the content of components paint which are toxic. Such as volatile organic compounds, heavy metal, formaldehyde and others. Especially if the dried paint could direct contact with food such as food baskets. Coupled with the attention to the surrounding environment so as not to pollute the environment or more environmentally friendly. This is evidenced by the appearance of Water Based paint.

What are water based paints? Water based paints are paint with material based on water or dilution with water. Because the paint is based on water so water based paints will be environmentally friendly if compared with solvent based paints. Water based paints are also not rule out the possibility use heavy metal which is usually found on the dyes. For that you also have to be more be careful in the selection of water based paints.

Water based paint is more cheap than solvent based paints. But why? Solvent based paint with a diluent solvent depends strongly on the rise oil prices in world. where as water based paints only a small fraction. This is because the rising price of polymers, thus making for water based binder will become expensive. Certainly will result in the price of water based paints. The increase price of water based paints are not too significant if compared with solvent based paints.

Water based paints are very dependent on the binder which is very different from the solvent based paint. Until now, the emulsion is most widely binder used in water based paint because the price is quite cheap. Although it has been developed PUD(Poly Urethane Dispersion) which have better results but it is much more expensive. How about the pigment used? Pigment used doesn't differ much with the pigment used in the solvent based. Often the pigment extenders used are calcium carbonate type which having cheapest price.

Because the nature of the polymer is non polar while water is polar, this cause water based paint has many weaknesses. So that more water based paints use various additives. Additives did not escape from the raw materials that are not allowed by some furniture buyers. Like APEO(Alkylphenol Ethoxylates). In some countries this material are not used anymore because it is toxic to aquatic life.

Although water based paints more environmentally friendly, but in the selection of raw materials paint is also expected to meet the regulations and requirements. Moreover, if painting furniture for baby crib or for children toys that are certainly more stringent. For those of you who want to painted furniture for your child, you should ask more of any specification required to the seller(store that sells paint).
